Delineating modelling uncertainty in river flow indicators with representative parameter sets

چکیده
For mitigating negative effects of floods and droughts, estimates flow indicators their uncertainties are essential. The recently introduced concept the representative parameter sets (RPSs) enables modelling uncertainty to be represented in frequency space at low computational cost, using a small subset pre-selected model sets. This is here adapted assess hazards three indicators: annual maximal flow, 7-day-average mean flow. An additional in-depth analysis assesses RPS transferability other hydrological signatures. RPS-based simulations benchmarked with random selection results show that i) RPSs can successfully transferred between only drop performance; ii) used represent has thus great potential for delineating any environmental model.

Mortality Improvement Rates: Modelling and Parameter Uncertainty
Rather than looking at mortality rates directly, a number of recent academic studies have looked at modelling rates of improvement in mortality when making mortality projections. Although relatively new in the academic literature, the use of mortality improvement rates has a long-standing tradition in actuarial practice when allowing for improvements in mortality from standard mortality tables....
متن کاملModelling subsurface storm flow with the Representative Elementary Watershed (REW) approach: application to the Alzette River Basin
A new domain, the macropore domain describing subsurface storm flow, has been introduced to the Representative Elementary Watershed (REW) approach. The mass balance equations have been reformulated and the closure relations associated with subsurface storm flow have been developed. The model code, REWASH, has been revised accordingly. With the revised REWASH, a rainfall-runoff model has been bu...
متن کاملParsimonious Catchment and River Flow Modelling
It is increasingly the case that models are being developed as “evolving” products rather than one-off application tools, such that auditable modelling versus ad hoc treatment of models becomes a pivotal issue. Auditable modelling is particularly vital to “parsimonious modelling” aimed at meeting specific modelling requirements. This paper outlines various contributory factors and aims to seed ...
متن کاملDelineating parameter unidentifiabilities in complex models.
Scientists use mathematical modeling as a tool for understanding and predicting the properties of complex physical systems. In highly parametrized models there often exist relationships between parameters over which model predictions are identical, or nearly identical. These are known as structural or practical unidentifiabilities, respectively. They are hard to diagnose and make reliable param...
متن کاملUncertainty Reduction in River Water Quality Modelling, Application on the River Dender in Belgium
Recently the European Union has approved the EU Water Framework Directive (EU-WFD). This directive claims that by the end of 2015 a “good status of surface water“ and a “good status of groundwater” should be achieved (EU, 2000). To that end, the EU-WFD provides several guidelines for monitoring the water bodies, leaving the practical implementation to the local governments. Each region has to d...
